Are You Making Noise or Music?
Personal Style is in fact a journey into our best selves. The goal is mastery of the things, pieces, and ideas that express our highest ideals. I was asked the other day by my friend’s mother what the value was in wearing clothes that fit and flatter or that complement the natural coloring, or let’s say, hiring a fashion consultant?. “What does it matter? Isn’t it enough that we be neat and clean and that I like the garment in question, regardless of whether anyone likes it or not?” she asked. I thought, what an interesting question. As you may well know from experience, we like and sometimes enjoy a number of things, ideas, people, and places, and situations that may not necessarily serve our best interest in the long run. Even what may feel or be wrong, may overtime, become to feel normal, natural and comfortable after constant exposure. Why did it matter
to wear colors, clothes, shapes, and styles, that individually and specifically flatter our style and makeup? Does anyone really notice? Do people really care?
Then I began to compare the analogy to the difference between noise and music. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder, no different than noise being to one what music is to another, but there is one thing that we can all agree on. Noise is distracting and we want to remove ourselves as far away from it as possible. Due to the lack of coherent flow in rhythm, harmony, and melody, noise can by annoying to some and repulsive to another. Music on the other hand is pleasing to the listener. Although you may not have a preference for the particular artist in question, you will inherently recognize when the language of music is used coherently, systematically, harmoniously and consistently. You may not be able to make out specific keys or notes, but to your soul, it feels right and it makes sense; whether you’ve heard it once or one hundred times. You can basks in music, revel in it, enjoy it, you are at peace, drawn in, pulled in, you are engaged.
Hence the value of wearing items that fit, flatter, balance, and harmonize us. Just as we know when we hear music, we intuitively know when we are in the company of personal style that has taken advantage of the key elements that makeup basic design: line, harmony, balance, form, texture, and color. It feels right, it feels beautiful to see and experience and it makes sense. We may not know consciously why such a person has a positive, attractive pull or effect on us, but subconsciously, our hearts and minds agree.
Now music is rare in a sea of noise, but this is the reason why music is so appreciated, embraced, and respected for what it is, but so is style, in a sea of haphazard, frumpy, and thrown together looks in a an ocean of sameness. Style, infused with creativity and imagination, is rare, yet it is beautiful to behold and experience. You want to stay longer to soak it all in. You find yourself asking questions, for whatever reason, you want to get to know this person. You want to understand how he or she came to be. You are inspired, encouraged, challenged to grow, engaged all without one word being said, yet communicated through the art of personal style. You may not agree with the style or prefer that particular sort of style, but you admire it, because you respect the attention to detail and the courage it took to express it.
You have a choice.
