What Color COMBINATIONS Do You Wear Most Often?
An Art Affair
To wear color in fresh and creative ways is inspiring and aspiring, for the simple fact that it takes confidence to pull of such a look. Even though one may learn color theory in a graphic design or art class, many women still struggle to apply the same color concepts to their wardrobe, and that’s if they wear color at all. Wearing color combinations are fun and attractive. You stand out from the crowd, you show of your style personality and you also appear approachable. Working with color in this format can feel intimidating to some, but to have an art affair with your wardrobe, it will be helpful to understand the science behind playing with color. You may find it safe to stick to browns, blacks and greys, yet color enlivens a wardrobe and makes life fun, vibrant, and interesting.
Wear Color with Confidence
Color can have a profound effect on how we feel. Wearing the right colors for us can help to create a happier, more empowered mood but wearing colors that drag us down can have the opposite effect. Learning how to use color successfully in your outfits will give you new opportunities to be creative with your style. You can instantly jazz up a normally bland outfit through an eye-catching focal piece, or add some personality to your outfit through colorful accessories, handkerchiefs, or scarves.
The color combinations I wear are colors that I already wear most often. I put my favorite colors together in one outfit. For example, blues and purples, purples and pinks, and sometimes I add colors I don’t particular look best in (like orange or soft green) as accessories since it will be best to wear these colors away from my face. I introduce metallic like gold and silver and apply these as color concepts (rhythm, focal point, etc.) to ground my look and style.
Remember the peacock: when it spreads its stunningly colored feathers it gains attention and admiration. Using the right colors in your outfits can gain positive attention and can communicate confidence and a comfortable sense of your own personal style.
Rules to Color
There are key points to keep in mind as you work with color.
- When searching for the best colors, consider your skin tone and how well it works with certain shades and colors. Wearing the right tones will create a harmonious effect
- Three (3) colors are the most you want to do in one outfit or it will look too busy; two (2) colors are better unless it’s a multi-print piece.
- When wearing two or more colors, repeat one of the colors. Called rhythm as the eye needs to connect the dot about why you added a second color or third color. (Mrs. Michelle Obama has done this)
- Keep the strongest color within your outfit in an area of interest, i.e. to detract attention from your lower body, apply color to your upper body (Kim Kardashian) or vice versa.
- Black is not the only color that will help you look slimmer. Any color worn from head to toe (green, yellow, red, etc.) will help you to create a slim and streamlined silhouette.
- Remember the color wheel from elementary school and from your art classes? those color still apply today. A color wheel does not make color decisions for us, but it does help us understand the relationship between colors, and that makes outfit selections a lot easier. For example, consider monochromatic tones (third picture from the top), complementary colors (Kim Kardashian), or analogous colors (last 4th picture at the very top).
Open your eyes, creativity and imagination with color.

First off, ROCK that color! You are so beautiful in these pics and, after reviewing them, you don’t go all matchy-matchy.
I read this earlier and finished up with a severe case of color inadequacy. You are brave, yet the colors look so damned good. I feel like I could wear brights, but i don’t trust my own judgment often.
I do like the photos you included of others and yourself.
Can you do a brief follow up article on the color wheel and color theory?
I like how this article —>>> (http://www.curbly.com/diy-maven/posts/690-color-wheel-romance) addresses it (I read this a long time ago) and taking the mystery out of what goes good together for those of us who don’t have a gifted eye helps. I think that we would love to see a follow up from you to help train our eyes! You are like the Color Wheel Goddess!
For the record, I wear a lot of brown, grey, black, and some red. I’m a color scaredy cat!
This is beautiful Adrienne…Thank you! and I love your vulnerability.
” i don’t trust my own judgment often”
This is the foundation and the root of it all. I do feel and believe that when you have the basic knowledge and understanding of color, you will grow in confidence. When we don’t trust our judgement for something as simple as how to wear color, we can develop habits of not trusting our judgement in other areas of our lives. When we grow in confidence as it relates to how we dress, we grow in confidence in other areas as well.
The most important thing and first step is to begin with the colors that look best on you. Once you know what colors work best for you, then that will determine HOW you wear the colors and that actually becomes the easiest part.
I found this article that might be beneficial to explain color theory

Here is another link, titled “How many colors should you use in your design?” This also applies to outfits as well as the rules of color is the same

I’m doing better with color. I love purple, royal blue and pink. I didn’t wear color in the past because I didn’t want the attention. Now I see how it makes me seem warm and inviting. I’m adding more color to my closet this winter!!
..
Well, it honestly depends on my mood. Often I have a base color (gray or black) and dress it with colors. I love purples and oranges as a combo. I like bold mustard and blues (turquoise). At times the colors don’t make sense however when I walk out I have a “I can rock this” kinda confidence. With confidence I feel like I can rock any color. That came over time because I was not always like that. I put colors together that people would tell me they couldn’t have put that together.
For the fall I am feeling more muted colors this season. Loving mauves, rustic orange, navy blues, grays…I guess I’m all over the place LOL!
