My Natural Hair Care Regimen
Taking care of your hair is usually a great place to start to begin to look and feel better very early in the process of your personal style and image development. 10 years ago I decided to make the best of what I had. I ditched the relaxer and decided I was ready for a style that really reflected my character and oozed personality.
At first I wanted what I didn’t have: bone straight hair, red hair, blond hair, loose curls, big hair, you name it. I wanted it all but my hair, except after a while I decided that this was not the best way for me to express my authentic self. My decision to go natural also had to do with the fact that as a single woman, I’d prefer to attract a man who loved me for me, natural hair and all. I didn’t want to have a bone straight long hairstyle and feel enslaved to it due to fear that he wouldn’t like the real me when I decided to let it go so off with the weaves and the relaxers.
For several years I experimented with many products, not really finding anything that worked best for my hair. With all of this, I became a product junkie, addicted to one newest trend, one YouTube video and one product line after another. This became expensive and time-consuming so I went back to what felt easy: wearing wigs.
Eventually this became old fast and I craved being able to wear my hair and grow out healthy hair so after several products, trials and errors, I finally decided on a product and regimen that works BEST for me.
The most important thing for me was to decide not to color my hair. I have what you consider a 4A and 4B curl pattern, with 4A in the front and nape of my hair and 4B on the top and middle. Because of the texture and density of my hair which is also very fine, my hair doesn’t take too well to harsh ingredients and chemicals and after noticing that my hair wasn’t growing as full and as bounty as I would like, the first thing I did was let go of wearing permanent color.

Once I FINALLY let go of colors and wigs, I focused on a simple hair care regimen that felt right and made sense for me. The line that I’m loving now is the Shea Moisture line. I decided over the Christmas holidays to give it a try when I saw it stocked at Walgreens. For a while I’d been using Kinky-Curly which is still a personal favorite of mine when I want defined coils, but instead of that this time I decided to try Shea Moisture.
